Long-term safety planning

Even years after a woman has left a relationship in which she was abused, her former partner may continue to threaten and harass her. This is especially easy if there are children because the abuser can use them as an excuse for contact with her.

Long-term safety plan considerations include:

  • Keeping privacy settings on electronic devices high.
  • Limiting communication to only what is necessary.
  • Keeping a record of any disagreements or challenges, especially those related to the children.
  • Paying attention to information about the abuser, especially any changes in their life (job loss, end of a subsequent relationship, mental health or substance use issues).
  • Anticipating a reaction from the abuser if the woman starts a new relationship.
  • Being ready to involve the RCMP/police if the abuser does anything untoward.

Ensuring the woman has an active safety plan for events that bring her into contact with her ex-partner (e.g., children’s special events such as school graduation, weddings, birth of grandchildren).
