Evidence

Why evidence matters

Family court outcomes are based on the evidence and information the people present to the court. This is especially true in cases involving abuse, because its importance is still misunderstood by many in the family law system and because abusers routinely minimize and/or deny the abuse.

The woman will also need to present evidence about parenting, if there are children, and financial and property information if support and property division are matters for the court to resolve.

Detailed, accurate information will assist the woman’s lawyer to give her appropriate advice about realistic legal options. The lawyer will also be able to use their time more efficiently and work more effectively with the client.

Judges must have detailed information so they can make the best orders possible according to the needs of the family.
